Master class information:

  • This workshop is open to conductors at all levels of proficiency, from beginners to professionals.
    There is no age limit.
  • The official language is English and Russian.
  • Participants will work with the orchestra for 4 days. Each participant will conduct the orchestra every day for at least 30 minutes (total 2 hours on podium, plus the dress rehearsal and the concert).
  • Assistance with Visa issuance (i. e. Invitation Letter) for Russia is available at no additional cost (required for most nationals).
  • Assistance with finding accommodation.
  • All sessions can be videotaped.
  • Final public concert will be videotaped. The performance DVD will be sent to each participant free of charge (i. e. included in the price of the master class).
  • All active participants will conduct at the final public concert.
  • EACH PARTICIPANT IS GUARANTEED AT LEAST 120 MINUTES AT THE FRONT OF THE ORCHESTRA (30 MINUTES EACH DAY), PLUS DRESS REHEARSAL AND THE CONCERT - THAT IS 150 MINUTES OR MORE. Additional time is possible.
  • The workshop fee covers all master class sessions.
A Certificate of Completion will be issued to each participant, whether active or passive, after the final public concert.

About the Faculty:

• Diploma-recipient at the All-Russian Conducting Competition.

Leonid Korchmar is a Russian conductor, and is currently a conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre, and the Principal Guest Conductor of the Buryat State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. At the same time, he is a Professor of Operatic and Symphonic Conducting at the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory. He is an Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation, and of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, and was a diploma winner at the All-Russian Conducting Competition in 1981.

Korchmar worked as a conductor with the Voronezh State Symphony Orchestra and Yekaterinburg State Symphony Orchestra from 1976 to 1979, and was named Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the State Academic Saratov Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 1984. In the 2005-2006 season he was the Music Director of a series of productions at the National Opera House in Vladikavkaz and Almata.

In 1989, he joined the world-famous Mariinsky Theatre as a conductor, where his repertoire includes more than 30 operas and ballets, such as Otello, The Love for Three Oranges, The Gambler, Kashchei the Immortal, Ruslan and Lyudmila, Boris Godunov, The Fiery Angel, Salome, Nabucco, amongst others. He has also toured with the Mariinsky Theatre to Germany, Scandinavia, Italy, the USA, France, and Portugal.

Korchmar studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Leo Ginzburg, and at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Ilya Musin, after which he was appointed as a trainee-assistant conductor with the Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. As a Professor of Conducting he has produced many excellent students who now hold important conducting positions around the world, including Anu Tali, Darrell Ang, Gavriel Heine, Christian Knapp, Sasha Makila, and many others.
